The Ultimate Guide to Caring for Your Cast

Welcome to Next Journey Orthopaedics' guide to taking care of your cast! We know that having a cast can be tough, so we made these simple tips to help you stay comfortable and get better quickly.

**Don’t Put Objects Inside the Cast**

Do not scratch the skin under the cast by putting objects like pencils or hangers inside. This can cause sores or infections. Also, make sure small toys or objects do not get inside the cast.

**Watch Out for Cracks and Breaks**

We want you to feel in control of your healing journey. Check your cast for any cracks or breaks. If you see any problems, please schedule an appointment to be seen. We will fix it quickly to keep you on track to getting better.

**Padding for Comfort**

Comfort is key when you have a cast. Rough edges and irritation shouldn't bother you. Use moleskin or soft padding to make your cast more comfortable and protect your skin from scratches. Padding can help a lot with itchy, irritated skin.

**Elevate the Limb**

Keep your limb elevated to reduce swelling and pain. If you notice numbness or increasing pain, please schedule an appointment or contact us immediately.

Keeping Your Cast Dry and Clean

We know that keeping your cast dry is super important. You can use waterproof cast covers or even plastic bags sealed with tape to keep your cast dry during bath time. It's best not to swim or soak in the tub, as getting your cast wet can cause problems.

You can use a hairdryer set to cool to blow air under the cast to cool down hot, itchy skin. Never blow warm or hot air into the cast. Also, cover your cast while you are eating to prevent food spills and crumbs from getting inside.

**Don’t Put Objects Inside the Cast**

Do not scratch the skin under the cast by putting objects like pencils or hangers inside. This can cause sores or infections. Also, make sure small toys or objects do not get inside the cast.
