Tendonitis
What is tendonitis?
Tendonitis is when a tendon, which is the tissue that connects muscle to bone, becomes inflamed. This can happen due to overuse or repetitive motions. Symptoms of tendonitis include pain, tenderness, swelling, and warmth around the affected area. To diagnose tendonitis, a doctor will ask about your medical history and symptoms and then examine the affected area. They may also order imaging tests such as an X-ray or MRI. Treatment for tendonitis typically includes resting the affected area, icing it, and taking over-the-counter pain relievers. Physical therapy may also be recommended to help stretch and strengthen the muscles and tendons. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary.
If you think you may have tendonitis, see your doctor so they can diagnose and treat the condition. With proper treatment, tendonitis usually goes away within a few weeks. However, the condition can come back if you don’t take measures to prevent it. To help prevent tendonitis, warm up before participating in activities and stretch afterwards. Also, be sure to use proper form when exercising and avoid repetitive motions when possible. If you have a job that requires repetitive motions, take breaks often to rest your muscles and tendons.
Tendonitis can be a painful condition, but luckily it is usually treatable. If you think you may have tendonitis, see your doctor to get started on a treatment plan.
