Staying Active Safely with a Cast

Activity tips to protect your injury, prevent falls, and avoid cast damage while you recover.

- Follow weight-bearing instructions exactly (non-weight-bearing vs partial vs full).
- Use the prescribed device (crutches, walker, scooter) and wear supportive shoes on the other foot.
- Protect the cast during chores and sports sidelines (cast cover or loose clothing).
- Take breaks and elevate after activity to control swelling.
- Ask before returning to gym, running, or contact sports.

- Do not walk on a non-weight-bearing cast or use it as a “support.”
- Do not do contact sports or risky activities that could cause a fall.
- Do not get the cast wet during workouts.
- Do not lift heavy items that stress the injured limb.
- Do not drive if your provider says you should not (see driving guide).

1) Confirm your restrictions (weight-bearing, lifting, sports) from your visit summary.
2) Choose safe surfaces: avoid ice, wet floors, and cluttered stairs.
3) Use your device correctly; ask us for a fit check if unsure.
4) After activity, elevate 20–30 minutes and do gentle finger/toe motion.
5) If you fall or the cast cracks/loosens, call us.
