Pomegranate Juice
Help
Why it matters
Pomegranate juice is one of the more studied polyphenol-rich juices for osteoarthritis and exercise recovery. Early trials suggest benefits for stiffness and physical function, but sugar content and medication interactions matter.
Details
Pomegranate juice is a tart, polyphenol-rich fruit juice made from Punica granatum. It delivers punicalagins, ellagitannins, anthocyanins, and potassium, compounds linked to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. These bioactives may influence oxidative stress, matrix-degrading enzymes, and recovery pathways relevant to stiffness and joint function. In a small clinical trial in knee osteoarthritis, pomegranate juice improved WOMAC stiffness and physical function and lowered MMP-13 while improving antioxidant status (Ghoochani et al., 2016). A subsequent systematic review concluded that pomegranate shows promise in osteoarthritis, but the evidence base remains limited and heterogeneous (Mahdavi et al., 2021). In practice, choose 100% unsweetened juice and use moderate portions rather than large glasses.
Nutritional List
Punicalagins, Ellagitannins, Anthocyanins, Polyphenols, Potassium
Potential Stiffness Target
Knee osteoarthritis stiffness, cartilage breakdown, post-exercise soreness
Practical Intake
A practical food-first target is 4-8 oz daily of 100% pomegranate juice, ideally with a meal. Use small glasses, mix with sparkling water, or add to smoothies if the flavor is too intense; if glucose control is a concern, keep portions modest.
