Crutches and Stairs with a Leg Cast
Practical safety tips for crutches, stairs, and fall prevention with a leg cast or splint.
- Make sure crutches are adjusted to your height and have good rubber tips.
- Use handrails on stairs whenever possible.
- Keep pathways clear and use non-slip footwear on the uninjured foot.
- Take breaks and elevate if swelling increases.
- Ask for a fit check if you have wrist/shoulder pain from crutches.
- Do not hop quickly on stairs or carry heavy items while using crutches.
- Do not use crutches on wet/icy surfaces without help.
- Do not walk on a non-weight-bearing cast.
- Do not use worn crutch tips.
- Do not ignore dizziness or near-falls.
1) Stairs (up): lead with the good leg; bring crutches and cast up to the step after.
2) Stairs (down): place crutches down one step first; move the casted leg down; then the good leg.
3) Always use a handrail if available; go slowly.
4) Keep your body upright; don’t lean far forward.
5) If you fall or the cast cracks/loosens, call us.
- Fall, new injury pain, or cast damage.
- Increasing swelling, numbness, or discoloration after walking.
- Wrist/shoulder pain that limits safe crutch use.
