Conditions and Injuries

Common Orthopaedic Terms

Arthritis

Arthritis refers to inflammation of one or more joints, resulting in pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion. There are different types of arthritis (e.g., osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis), as well as symptoms and management strategies.

Bursitis

Bursitis is inflammation of the bursae, small fluid-filled sacs that cushion and lubricate joints.

Fasciitis

Fasciitis is a common cause of pain, resulting from inflammation of the fascia, a band of tissue that multiple functions in the body. For example in the foot it supports the arch of the foot.

Fracture

It occurs when the bone structure fails, resulting in a crack or complete break. Fractures can vary in severity, from hairline fractures with minimal displacement to compound/open fractures where the broken bone pierces through the skin.

Inflammation

Inflammation is a natural response of the body to injury or infection, characterized by redness, swelling, heat, and pain.

Sprain

A sprain occurs when ligaments, which connect bones to each other, are stretched or torn due to sudden twisting or impact.

Strain

A strain involves the stretching or tearing of muscles or tendons, which connect muscles to bones.

Tendonitis

Tendonitis, or tendinitis, involves inflammation or irritation of a tendon, typically due to overuse or repetitive motion
