Preventing Pressure Sores Under a Cast
Spot early signs of pressure and protect your skin before minor irritation becomes an injury.
- Pay attention to focal burning pain or a new “hot spot.”
- Elevate to reduce swelling-related pressure.
- Keep the cast clean and dry; moisture increases skin breakdown risk.
- Check edges daily for redness and tender areas.
- Call early—small adjustments can prevent bigger problems.
- Do not pad deep inside the cast with objects or materials at home.
- Do not ignore persistent burning pain.
- Do not keep a wet cast.
- Do not add tight tape or wraps that increase pressure.
- Do not wait until you see drainage to call.
1) Identify: notice if pain is focal (one specific point) rather than generalized soreness.
2) Elevate: rest the limb above heart level for 20–30 minutes.
3) Reduce activity and keep weight off if instructed.
4) Call us for an evaluation and possible cast adjustment/padding.
5) Monitor: if you develop fever, drainage, or worsening odor, seek care urgently.
- Burning pain or a hot spot that persists after elevation.
