Finger Range of Motion

Purpose: Prevent stiffness and swelling by keeping fingers moving through full, comfortable motion.

Equipment: None.

How to do it:
1) With your hand supported, slowly make a loose fist (bend knuckles and fingertips).
2) Open the hand fully, spreading fingers gently.
3) Then bend only the top two finger joints (hook fist), and open again.
4) Repeat smoothly, keeping the wrist relaxed.

Swelling tip: After a set, elevate the hand and gently pump the fingers open/closed for 10–20 seconds.

Dosage: 5 sets of 10 reps (or seconds/holds if that is how your therapist prescribed it). Rest 30–60 seconds between sets.

Progression:
- Work toward touching fingertips to the palm without forcing.
- Add gentle fingertip-to-thumb taps for coordination.

Comfort and safety:
Move slowly and stay in a comfortable range. A mild stretch or light muscle fatigue is okay; sharp pain is not.
Stop and contact your care team if you notice increasing swelling, redness, warmth, drainage, fever, or new/worsening numbness/tingling.
Follow any post-op precautions, lifting limits, and motion restrictions given by your surgeon or therapist.
