Cast Troubleshooting

Step-by-step fixes for common cast issues like dampness, odor, itching, rubbing, and loosening.

- Use cool air (fan or hair dryer on COOL) to dry the outside if lightly damp.
- Protect rough edges with soft padding or moleskin only if instructed; otherwise call us.
- Keep the limb elevated if swelling makes the cast feel tight.
- Document changes (photos of swelling/discoloration) if you need to call.
- Attend follow-ups; casts often need adjustment as swelling changes.

- Do not use heat to dry a cast (burn risk and cast damage).
- Do not stick objects inside to scratch or “reposition” padding.
- Do not tape the cast tightly to “make it smaller.”
- Do not ignore hot spots, burning pain, or skin breakdown signs.
- Do not keep a soaked cast—wet padding can cause skin injury quickly.

1) Damp outside: towel-dry and use cool air 20–30 minutes; re-check edges/padding.
2) Itching: try gentle tapping on the cast, cool air, or an approved itch tool; avoid sharp objects.
3) Rubbing edge: cushion with a soft cloth temporarily and call for proper padding/edge care.
4) Tightness: elevate 20–30 minutes; if pain/numbness persists, call urgently.
5) Loose/shifted cast: stop strenuous activity and call—may need re-fitting.

- Cast is soaked or padding is wet.
- Burning pain, hot spots, blisters, drainage, or foul odor.
- Cracks, softening, or cast breaks.
- Increasing tightness, numbness/tingling, or color change in fingers/toes.
