Protecting Cast Edges and Skin

Prevent rubbing, blisters, and skin irritation around cast edges and contact points.

- Check edges daily for redness, blisters, or tenderness.
- Keep skin around the cast clean and dry; pat dry after bathing.
- Use soft cloth or padding at the edge temporarily if it rubs (then call us for proper adjustment).
- Wear loose clothing over the cast to reduce friction.
- Keep nails short to avoid scratching skin at the edges.

- Do not cut or trim the cast edge at home.
- Do not push padding down inside the cast with tools.
- Do not tape tightly around the cast edge on skin.
- Do not ignore a focal “hot spot” or burning pain.
- Do not use creams under the cast edge unless instructed.

1) Inspect: look at the skin above and below the cast (and between fingers/toes if exposed).
2) Cushion: if an edge rubs, place a soft cloth over the area temporarily.
3) Rest/elevate if swelling is contributing to rubbing.
4) Call: schedule an edge check if redness lasts more than a few hours or worsens.
5) Monitor: if you see a blister, drainage, or severe pain, call urgently.

- Burning pain or a specific hot spot under the cast.
- Blistering, drainage, foul odor, or fever.
- Increasing swelling with tightness and numbness.
