Caring for a Splint

Daily splint care basics: how to keep it clean, manage swelling, and avoid skin problems.

- Keep the splint clean and dry; remove only if you were told it is removable.
- Elevate to reduce swelling, especially in the first week.
- Check skin under straps for redness or blisters.
- Keep straps snug but not tight; you should be able to slide a finger under straps.
- Bring the splint to follow-up visits.

- Do not overtighten straps (can cut off circulation).
- Do not remove a non-removable splint without instructions.
- Do not get padding wet.
- Do not sleep with straps twisted or buckles pressing into skin.
- Do not ignore increasing pain, numbness, or color change.

1) Check fit: ensure the splint is centered and straps lie flat.
2) Elevate: rest the limb on pillows 20–30 minutes as needed.
3) Skin check: look for red marks that last >30 minutes after loosening straps.
4) Clean: wipe hard plastic with a damp cloth; keep padding dry.
5) If swelling drops and splint feels loose, call us for guidance.

- Severe pain, numbness/tingling, or color change in fingers/toes.
- Red marks that blister or do not improve after loosening straps.
- Wet padding, foul odor, or skin breakdown.
