Turmeric (Curcumin)

Turmeric contains curcumin, a bioactive polyphenol widely studied for its ability to reduce inflammatory signaling. Clinical trials and meta-analyses show curcumin supplementation can lower CRP and improve pain and stiffness in inflammatory conditions.

Chronic inflammation is driven by overactive inflammatory pathways such as NF-κB and COX-2. Curcumin helps regulate these pathways, making turmeric a valuable dietary strategy for supporting inflammation control and symptom relief over time.

Turmeric is derived from the root of Curcuma longa and contains curcumin and related curcuminoids. These compounds inhibit inflammatory pathways including NF-κB and COX-2. Meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials demonstrate significant reductions in CRP, with a 2022 analysis showing an average reduction of approximately 3.7 mg/L. In arthritis populations, curcumin has demonstrated pain and inflammation reduction comparable to NSAIDs in some studies. Turmeric can be used in cooking or beverages such as golden milk. Absorption improves when consumed with black pepper and fat. Supplements should be used cautiously in patients on anticoagulants or preparing for surgery.
